Celebrating 10 Years of SIDM
A Series of Interviews
An Introduction by Paul L. Epner, MBA, MEd, SIDM Chief Executive Officer
Can it really be ten years since Mark Graber, Elizabeth Montgomery and I signed the papers that created SIDM? Together with Art Papier, David Newman-Toker and Ruth Ryan, the initial Board of Directors was created and the journey began. The past ten years has been exhilarating and impactful, and while there is much left to be done before eliminating harm from diagnostic error, SIDM can rightly claim credit for ensuring the issue is on the radar screen of health care needs. Catalyzing the National Academy of Medicine report, convening the Coalition to Improve Diagnosis, establishing the DxQI quality improvement seed grant program, creating the Fellowship in Diagnostic Excellence, using the annual conference to build community... the list goes on.
In this special issue of ImproveDx, we will visit with some of the pioneers and supporters who became key partners of SIDM and contributed to its growth and sustainability while also driving broader impact to the field of diagnostic quality and safety. As you read their perspectives, reflect on that period pre-2011 when SIDM didn’t exist, when “the delivery of healthcare had proceeded for decades with a blind spot: diagnostic errors” (NAM, 2015), and let us be thankful for their efforts and for SIDM.
