Programs

With support from funders who are committed to improving diagnosis, the Society to Improve Diagnosis in Medicine (SIDM) is spearheading significant projects to support clinicians, patients, researchers, and educators to improve the accuracy and timeliness of diagnosis and reduce harm caused by diagnostic error.

Awareness

Make improving diagnosis a priority for healthcare

  • ACT for Better Diagnosis
Improving the Accuracy, Communication and Timeliness of diagnosis by identifying and spreading practical steps that everyone throughout the healthcare system can take.

Research

Increase research on diagnosis and focus on diagnostic outcomes that matter to patients

  • Diagnosis and Telemedicine
The COVID-19 pandemic has transformed the usage of telemedicine overnight, establishing it as a mainstay for healthcare delivery and diagnosis. To navigate this new era of “telediagnosis,” SIDM will convene a series of conversations about TeleDx research priorities.
  • Journal Club
The SIDM Journal Club sessions focus on a recent publication of interest in the diagnostic error field and provides an opportunity for the participants to engage in research-related interactive discussions.

Education

Transform education of health professionals to improve diagnosis and develop new leaders in diagnostic quality and safety

  • Consensus Curriculum
Bringing together experts in education to develop consensus recommendations regarding diagnosis education.

Practice Improvement

Engage patients, clinicians, and healthcare systems to improve current diagnostic performance and reduce harm from diagnostic error

  • DxQI Seed Grant Program
Engaging healthcare organizations in efforts to identify, develop, and test interventions aimed at improving diagnostic quality.

Patient Engagement

Integrate patients and their families in all diagnostic improvement efforts

  • Addressing Disparities in Diagnosis
SIDM is partnering with Stanford University to conduct a two-year project to explore and address disparities in diagnosis related to cognitive reasoning pitfalls.
  • Patients Improving Research in Diagnosis
Through this program, SIDM and a team of research mentors worked with Patient Partners to refine their diagnostic error stories and cultivate skills to become full partners in research efforts to reduce the risk of diagnostic error that harms them.

Improving Diagnosis

SIDM catalyzes and leads change to improve diagnosis and eliminate harm from diagnostic error.
