SIDM Welcomes New Board Leadership & Members at DEM2018

Evanston, IL—(November 8, 2018) The Society to Improve Diagnosis in Medicine (SIDM) announced new board leadership at the organization’s annual business meeting during the 11th Annual International Diagnostic Error in Medicine Conference (DEM2018) this week in New Orleans. David Newman-Toker, MD, PhD, became SIDM president; Tim Mosher, MD became Secretary; and Jen Campisano, JD, Gurpreet Dhaliwal, MD, and Tom Lee, PhD, MBA joined as new board members.

“As the Society to Improve Diagnosis in Medicine continues to drive the diagnostic quality and safety agenda, we are excited to bring new leadership and new perspectives to our board of directors,” said Paul Epner, MBA, MEd, CEO and Co-founder of SIDM. “Our northstar continues to be reducing harm from diagnostic error, and the experience and expertise of this group of leaders will help us continue that singular strategic focus.”

David Newman-Toker, MD, PhD became President of SIDM during the meeting. Dr. Newman-Toker is Director of the Armstrong Institute Center for Diagnostic Excellence at Johns Hopkins Medicine, and Professor of Neurology, Ophthalmology, & Otolaryngology at the Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine. Newman-Toker also serves as Director of the Division of Neuro-Visual & Vestibular Disorders in the Department of Neurology. He co-chaired the SIDM Diagnostic Error Conferences in 2010, 2011 and 2012, served as the inaugural chairman of the SIDM Research Committee, and served as the inaugural chairman of the SIDM Policy Committee.

Tim Mosher, MD is the Kenneth L. Miller Chair of Radiology and Distinguished Professor of Radiology and Orthopedic Surgery at the Penn State University College of Medicine. He served as Deputy Editor for Magnetic Resonance in Medicine, Osteoarthritis and Cartilage, and is currently an Associate Editor for the journal Radiology. Dr. Mosher is a frequent NIH study section reviewer and has served on the Scientific Advisory Board for the Canadian Arthritis Network.

Jen Campisano, JD is a writer, lawyer and a six-year breast cancer survivor, who was misdiagnosed with metastatic breast cancer. Campisano lends her legislative experience to advocacy groups such as YSC and METUP. She is also a member of the National Coalition for Cancer Survivorship’s Cancer Policy & Advocacy Team.

Gurpreet Dhaliwal, MD is a clinician-educator and Professor of Medicine at the University of California San Francisco (UCSF). Dr. Dhaliwal is a member of the UCSF Academy of Medical Educators and the UCSF Department of Medicine Council of Master Clinicians. He writes for The Wall Street Journal’s “The Experts” healthcare blog, and he has published over 100 articles in leading medical journals including the New England Journal of Medicine and the Journal of the American Medical Association. Dr. Dhaliwal has also served as Chair of SIDM’s Education Committee since 2012.

Tom Lee, PhD, MBA is CEO and Founder of SA Ignite, a cloud-based technology company whose mission is to help healthcare providers successfully navigate the transition to value-based care. Dr. Lee is a serial entrepreneur and leading expert in healthcare value-based programs such as Merit-based Incentive Payment Systems (MIPS) and Advanced Alternative Payment Models (APM). His interest in diagnostic error stems from personal and family experiences and a belief that reducing such errors are vital to improving patient outcomes and the financial sustainability of health care.

DEM2018 is the only conference dedicated to the topic of diagnostic quality and safety.
