Coalition to Improve Diagnosis

About Our Coalition

The Coalition to Improve Diagnosis, formed and led by the Society to Improve Diagnosis in Medicine (SIDM), is a collaboration of more than 40 leading healthcare organizations focused on ensuring that diagnoses are accurate, communicated and timely. Our Coalition members represent doctors, nurses, testing professionals, patients and their families, employers, researchers, policymakers, educators and leading health organizations and government agencies involved in patient care.

The Coalition to Improve Diagnosis is the only collaboration of diverse healthcare organizations singularly focused on improving the diagnostic process. Together, we work to find solutions that enhance diagnostic quality and safety, reduce harm and ultimately, ensure better health outcomes for patients.

Coalition member organizations support the work of the Coalition on all of its collective actions in whatever way is appropriate for the member organization. In addition, they commit to engage their organization in ongoing individual meaningful action toward reducing the harm of diagnostic error and improving diagnostic accuracy and timeliness.

Goals of the Coalition

To bring greater attention and awareness to the need of improving the diagnostic process and engaging Coalition member organizations, their constituents and the broader healthcare community, the Coalition has launched the ACT for Better DiagnosisTM initiative.

In its 2015 report, Improving Diagnosis in Health Care, the National Academy of Medicine (NAM) noted diagnostic error has been a massive "blind spot" in the national effort to improve health care quality and safety. It issued an urgent call for dedicated research funding and a coordinated, multi-agency federal research agenda to immediately address diagnostic errors and harms.

The Coalition, working with the SIDM Policy Committee developed a Roadmap for Policy Action that reveals the vital need of increased research funding devoted to improving diagnosis. The Roadmap includes a three-pronged approach for policymakers to take to support and facilitate research that will lead to tangible increases in accurate and timely diagnosis:

(1.) Establish and fund Research Centers of Diagnostic Excellence,
(2.) Support and fund diagnostic fellowship training programs and
(3.) Develop and validate operationally viable measures.

Many members of the Coalition also signed on to a Consensus Statement in support of increased Federal funding for research.

The Coalition, with SIDM staff support, conducted an environmental scan to determine ongoing quality improvement activity. Little activity was detected. Subsequently, various Coalition members have pursued individual quality improvement efforts and SIDM, with Coalition partner IHI is piloting six quality improvement efforts across the county.
