Patients and family members have a significant opportunity to contribute to diagnostic accuracy and timeliness by actively participating in the diagnostic process. But often, they don't know the questions to ask, the information to offer, or the steps to take to improve diagnosis. This lack of understanding of the diagnostic process can lead to diagnostic delay, error, and ultimately, harm. At SIDM, we are focused on raising awareness about the magnitude and impact of diagnostic errors within the patient and consumer communities as well as providing tools, and resources to equip these communities to participate in achieving an accurate and timely diagnosis. We look forward to working with and learning from patients and families with “lived experience” and incorporating their stories of diagnostic error in all of SIDM’s diagnostic improvement efforts.

Patient Toolkit for Diagnosis

The Patient's Toolkit for Diagnosis is created for people who are not feeling well or are visiting their doctor or nurse with a health concern. As patients, we have found that taking an active role in our care can help our doctors and nurses figure out a good “working” diagnosis. Not all diagnoses are correct, which is why we say “working” diagnosis. A diagnosis may be certain or uncertain, and making a diagnosis could be easy or difficult.

Patient Views on Diagnosis

How can you involve patients in improving diagnostic quality? The Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality funded a collaborative research project involving SIDM, the Program for the Advancement of Research on Conflict and Collaboration (PARCC) at the Maxwell School of Citizenship and Public Affairs at Syracuse University, and the Jefferson Center. The project utilized deliberative approaches to engage healthcare consumers in developing informed, practical, patient-focused recommendations for improving diagnostic quality.
